Araitenjin Kitano shrine Haiden

This project involves rebuilding the haiden of the Kitano Shrine in Nakano Ward.

Because procuring large-section timber would require considerable time and because durability in rain-exposed areas was a concern, the structure was designed in steel. In contrast, the interior for ritual use employs shaku-kan dimensions based on the relationship to the sacred implements, and is finished in wood to carry on the traditional character of shrine architecture.

On the heiden side, the steel beams create an eave projecting one ken. Along the haiden façade, the columns stop short of the roof, and the wooden finishes are adjusted around the steel diaphragms, producing distinctive column–beam junctions. The combination of steel beams and traditional timber elements gives rise to a unique spatial expression.

中野区にある北野神社の拝殿の建替え計画。

大断面の木材を調達する時間的な制約や、雨がかり部分の耐久性を考慮し、構造には鉄骨造を採用した。一方で、祭祀のための内部空間は、神具との関係を考慮して尺貫寸法を用い、木材仕上げとすることで、伝統的なつくりを踏襲している。

幣殿側の屋根には一間の張り出しによる軒が生まれている。拝殿側面では柱が屋根まで達していないことや、鉄骨のダイアフラムをよけながら木で仕上げることで生じる柱梁接合部の組み合わせなど、鉄骨梁と伝統的な木材の組み合わせにより、独自のしつらえが現れている。
