House in Shinagawa

A detached house in a dense residential area of the city center.

Observing the increasing density of the surrounding neighborhood informed the careful determination of the building’s openings and its relationship to the exterior.

Four stacked volumes are slightly shifted from one another, each provided with a small balcony. This configuration brings a sense of openness into the interior while maintaining privacy. The first floor is set half below ground, securing distance from pedestrians while still receiving daylight.

Although the exterior reads as a four-story structure because of the shifting volumes and the placement of voids, the section reveals a three-level composition at any point it is cut.
